Microgaming announced the first in a trilogy of Lord Of The RingsTM online slots based on the film would be released into online casinos licensing their software from 2nd September 2010. It followed hard on the heels of their excellent Thunderstruck 2 follow-up and there are similarities between the two as they clearly use the same game engine. Both slots are 243-payline slots which basically means any symbol on any reel, left to right, combines to make a win. It's what IGT term "Multiway" and was first seen in "Treasures Of Troy" and "White Orchid".
The online version of the first Lord Of The Rings slot in the series, dubbed "The Fellowship of the Ring", has now been retird and replaced with a near-identical progressive jackpot version (see the video below). It is quite different to the WMS land-based LOTR slot being released at roughly the same time. It does however have stacked wilds and free spins bonus rounds plus a random "Gollum" feature which adds prizes and multipliers. I guess this is like the equivalent to Thunderstuck 2's Wildstorm feature if you have played that slot game.
Below is a video from the new The Lord Of The Rings slot showing the game in action (and the free spins bonus) It's described by Microgaming as being "medium volatility", which for experienced players equates to medium variance (or "risk") and has an expected payout (RTP or Return to Player) of between 96% and 97%. But bear in mind some of that will relate to the progressive jackpot element so "normal" gameplay will have a slightluy lower return (I'd guess around 95%).
