The Features

There were a few collective groans when Microgaming replaced their original Lord Of The Rings slot with a progressive version as the original had a lot of fans and a progressive jackpot always means a reduced RTP on the main game (normally knocks 2-3% off).

The new version isn't all bad though and it retains some of the popular features like stacked wild symbols and a free spin feature (which I'll come to in a bit) but it also added a few smaller features many of which are pretty crap to be frank. In essence, Microgaming have decided to try and add some entertainment value to a game that didn't really need any and in the process have dumbed down the variance a bit.

These new features tend to be played out by a very neat looking Gollum animation at random. Unfortunately and largely down to the fact that most of them rarely provide more than about 3x your bet back, once you've seen them they start to get tedious because you know that the reward isn't worth the wait. When Gollum climbs up over the Win Box and dumps some coins in the hopper or splashes around catching fish you really just wish he'd fall off or drown so you can get on with the game. A big juicy shark might add some excitement come to think of it. But not all the Gollum features are bad.

On occasions, Gollum climbs up onto the bottom of the slot and makes some reels wild (totally random). When you add into the mix the stacked wild symbols this can turn out to be a very decent feature. During the free spin feature (this Lord Of The Rings version rewards 15 free spins at 2x to start you off) Gollum can appear from either side of the reels and increase the multiplier by x1 or add a free spin or two. Those two are worth having.

The bottom line though is that all these features make for a very nice looking game but aimed now more at teh casual gambler looking for "entertainment" value rather than the more serious player who prefers a slightly more volatile game with the potential for more regular bigger rewards.

Lord Of The Rings is still a very nice slot but personally, the other more recent games from Microgaming like the excellent Thunderstruck 2 slot or the higher variance Immortal Romance slot are more up my street.
